homeless J.'s sound is a meticulous blend of pop craft, hard rock vigor, indie noise and unforgettable melody. Their lyrics are an amalgamation of intense, playful, and sometimes uncomfortable reflections on spiritual longing and discontent. They are miles outside the confines of one particular genre-paradigm yet maintain a consistency and sound that is eerily and unmistakably original. No matter your background or baggage, homeless J. will make a serious impression on the most avid music devotee and the occassional music spectator alike.
The band formed during the early 1990s, originally under the name Homeless Jesus (referring to the cover art of their first demo "Well With My Soul"). After forming, the band unofficially disbanded for a couple of years (other than a few sparse shows and a rock opera written by frontman Chad Van Meter called "Celebration of the Insiginificant" and performed at Spring Arbor University in the spring of 1998) so that band members could devote themselves to college studies.
The band resurfaced with great vigor in 2001 as homeless J. with a powerful and revised lineup consisting of original members Chad Van Meter (vocals) and Brad Amstutz (guitar [formerly on drums] plus new members brothers Jon Hill (bass guitar) and Lance Hill (drums). The new lineup quickly turned heads on the national level and the band signed within a year of their inception as homeless J. to a production deal and by 2002 to a major-label deal with MCA/Uninhibited. In 2006, the band's freshman release of "Three Seconds To Gaze" (along with their music video for "The Flash" directed by Taylor Gahm) helped them gain momentum and an excited Midwest following. So, when the band broke ties with MCA when it folded, homeless J. still had die-hard fans who greatly supported their first independent release of "The Squeeze" EP in 2007. Bubbling over with new music, the band quickly followed up the EP with a full length album "Until the Twilight" in 2008. And, now in 2010, only two years later, fast on the heels of their last full-length album, homeless J. is again in the studio recording a whole new set of fresh songs for their faithful fans.
From the beginning homeless J. has left an indelible mark on its listeners. The music is a strange alchemy of urgent intensity, vivid atmosphere, robust rhythm, and insightful reflection on meaning and spiritual longing. There is rare combination here of unusual depth and almost instant accessibility.
